Summary
Rectal tears are an uncommon but serious condition, most often reported in dogs with
pelvic fractures. However, this report documents a traumatic rectal tear in a dog
without pelvic fractures, and emphasizes the need for rectal examination in any dog
suspected of sustaining blunt trauma, whether or not pelvic fractures are obvious.
A traumatic rectal tear without pelvic fractures occurred in a dog after being hit
by a car. Prompt treatment resulted in an uncomplicated recovery.
